Today marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings when Allied forces launched the largest naval, air and land operation in history. On 6 June 1944 over 5,000 ships and landing craft were used to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy 🌊 🎥 In preparation for this operation, secret experiments took place at the Great Pagoda at Kew to develop the smoke curtain technique used by Allied forces on D-Day. Powerful images of the D-Day landings have resurfaced 80 years after they were taken by American cameramen on Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. French documentarian Dominique Forget rediscovered the forgotten footage and, alongside the cameramen’s ancestors, now wants to preserve and honour their memory.
