The Florence Dome, or ll Duomo, is the crowning jewel of the Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore), designed by the brilliant architect Filippo Brunelleschi in the 15th century. Bruneleschi's innovative engineering techniques, including the use of a double-shell structure and a uniaue herringbone brick pattern, allowed the massive dome to be constructed without scaffolding, a feat unmatched at its time.
