How the Red Baron's Knockoff Aircraft Became the First Great Warplane
Though the Allies won the war and the glory, the Germans gave us one of the most famous airplanes of the Great War. The Fokker Dr.1 triplane, flown by one of history's great fighter pilots, is among the most recognizable aircraft of the early twentieth century and it played a significant role in launching dogfighting as a new form of combat.

A Fokker Dr.1 from the Golden Age Air Museum night shoot. Besides the beautifully crafted wooden prop, pay close attention to the engine as it is being hand propped. This is an original Le Rhone Rotary engine and you will notice all the cylinder heads rotating, unlike a standard rotary engine where the cylinders stay fixed and an internal crankshaft rotates. Amazing to hear as well as see. In the dark the blue exhaust appears on the lower right side of the engine. The Golden Age Air Museumm staf

Fokker Dr. I Although Fokker built a total of 320 Dr. Is, none survived. This reproduction is painted to represent the aircraft flown by Lt. Arthur Rahn in April 1918 when he served with Jagdstaffel 19 during WWI. Lt. Rahn is credited with six confirmed victories. The Fokker DR-1 (DR standing for Dreidecker, or 3 wings) was arguably the most famous plane of World War I. This is probably because it was associated with the Red Baron. The Fokker DR-1 was 5.77m long, 2.95m high, and had a wingspan of 7.19m. The airframe was made out of steel tubing that was covered in aircraft doped canvas. When it was empty, it weighed 405kg. It had one 80kw engine and could fly a maximum speed of 185Km/H for a maximum time of 1 hour and 30 minutes at a maximum altitude of 1
