We spotted this elegant kelp greenling (Hexagrammos decagrammus) swimming past the Campbell River community observatory platform yesterday, located in Kwakwaka'wak and Coast Salish territory. Sound on! This species occurs in rocky nearshore areas of the northern Pacific and is common on kelp beds and sandy bottoms. They feed on crustaceans, polychaete worms, brittle stars, mollusks, and small fishes. Unique to this species is its mating ritual, where males attempt to inseminate eggs in the nests
